Lambert House was founded by a child and adolescent medicine clinic director to address the physical and mental health disparities experienced by LGBTQ+ youth. These include suicide, homelessness, substance use disorders, survival sex, HIV, bullying and school failure, among others.
The house features five bedrooms and six bathrooms, providing ample space for Lambert’s family, which includes his parents and younger brother. The lot size, 0.26 acres, is generously proportioned, affording both privacy and scenic views of the surrounding area. During the pandemic, Lambert House found a new life online, and their programs reached more youth than ever before.
This new building will serve 113 current Lambert Houses residents and 49 low-income households, selected through the Housing Connect lottery. Volunteers help chaperone the drop-in center and are responsible for providing a safe and supportive place for LGBTQ youth. Volunteers build build healthy relationships with program participants and serve as both informal mentors, and role models for youth. Each volunteer is asked to cover a minimum of one three hour shift scheduled at the same time each week, and commit to at least one year of volunteering. The minimum age to be a drop-center volunteer is 23, or 24 if a former youth program participant. Shades of gray cover the exterior and continue inside, including a rotunda staircase that navigates the two-story floor plan.
